My connection is about as far away as you can get and still have service. In fact the techs were surprised I could connect at all. They tell me the same thing. I did have one technician stop by and improve my up load speed by 300% but the down stream side is still below the 758 they advertise. I've stopped holding by breath for an improvement. I think it's just there typical song and dance for people like us. I do however keep an eye out for something better. There are other options satellite and over the power lines is even possible but much more expensive. We have cable here and I'm wondering when they'll wise up and offer service for computing only at or near the same price. The cable companies are really feeling the pinch as DSL continues to steal there customers. My guess would be that the satellite companies maybe moving into there market soon as well and good, the cable companies have been gouging the consumer long enough.
Hi Everyone,
I have had dial up for years and just got low level dsl (256) as I am 20600 feet from the CO. I get conflicting stories from my company about things currently being done or things that can be done to get faster access rates (1.5/756+ up to the 3-6+ instead of the 256.
The phone lineman said that the company is putting up "boxes" on the telephone poles for people farther out that allows them to get the faster connections as it makes it the distance from the box on the telephone pole to their house rather then from their house to the CO that matters. He said it was called a dslam or remote terminal. I tried looking them up to get an idea of price and how they work, but couldn't find much in the way of information. Is this the right name for these things, or is the guy mistating what it is?
The customer service rep from the company said that within a year (2009) there will be higher speed access at my house as it is all regulated by law for 2009. I also couldn't find anything on this online, but am probably looking for the wrong thing. Anyone know what this is about?
What can be done to get faster dsl service at my distance from the CO? There is no cable tv here, so that isn't an o0ption. i wouldn't have a problem paying some money to have something put up on the telephone pole to get faster dsl access for my house, but I need to know what it is to research it and call about it. Anyone have any ideas?
