dskchk hanging on stage 4 of 5 at 10%

hi there my maxtor 500 gig hard drive gives me this message when i try access it "the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable" i ran this command in command promt, chkdsk i: /f /r but it just hangs on stage 4 of 5 at 10%. any ideas what i can do i have a lot of data on the drive i would like to recover

That's what data recovery programs are for. http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7588_102-354911.html?tag=threadListing;forum-threads has some suggestions.

Two remarks:
1. First make a clone of this disk (on another disk) and work on that.
2. Where's your backup?
