the CD-ROM part of the burner. {XP identifies CD-ROMs from CD-RW's and has limited burner software] See why we like to know what operating ststem one is using when one makes a post??????????

Go up in Safe Mode. Go into device manager and remove ALL CD drives, not just duplicates. Then reboot.

During the boot at the boot screen that lists the drives and memory et al see if the drives show there. [to be able to read the entire screen simply hit pause as soon as that screen shows.]

If the BIOS doesn't see them we need to look into that aspect.

Keep us informed.

***-u-me that you had reconnected the CD drives. If you failed to do that there is absolutely no mystery why you can't see them.

the screen throught??? You should have gotten a couple of dialog boxes which say "Windows has detected new hardware and is installing ****.

Check Device manager in normal mode again and see if the CD's show in device manager.

I hope others are around to help tonight. I have to go to a busget meeting to try to NOT raise our taxes. LOL

I'll email Toni Hackler to see if she can pitch in.

CD drives don't need drivers, they just work.

If you were running Roxio EZ CD software and removed it that can cause your CD drives to disappear and you must fix the registry to resolve it.

Tell us more about what happened, did you plug the drives back in?

Roxio EZ Cd is one of the programs that

may be used to perform the burning function of the CD-RW. {as Jeff Marchi says you don't need drivers for the CD ROM portion, Microsoft automatically installs them.

When you went up in safe mode, were there either or both of the CD Drives shown in Device Manager???

That black and white screen is the boot screen and should show all of the drives that the system has detected at boot.

If the Pro that you hired disconnected the drives, it it possible that he went into the BIOS and chnged the setting for their slots to NONE or ???

Try this
Oct 19, 2004 7:12AM PDT

If the drives are showing up during the first black and white boot screen.......

Go to Device Mgr, right click the entry for:

ALI m5229 pci bus master ide controller

Choose Properties, and where it says 'default' use the down arrow to choose "enable BOTH". Click Apply and OK.

Now go to RUN, type REGEDIT and click Edit, click Find, type NOIDE and click Find Now. If the entry shows up on the right hand side, right click it and click Delete.

Now go back to Edit, click Find, type BADIDE, click Find Now and if an entry shows up on the right hand side, right click it and choose Delete.

Reboot the computer and see if your Device Mgr now shows no exclamation marks next to your IDE controllers and that your cdroms are showing up properly.

If this still doesn't work, let us know.
