drive plays DVDs, not CDs

Nov 5, 2004 12:27AM PST

my friend had a new motherboard put in her Hp computer and since getting it back the dvd/cdrw drive is screwy. it will play a dvd with no problem but does not even recognize when a cd is inserted. ive tried factory music cds, cd-r, cd-rw, makes no difference. updated firmware and drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled. no conflicts show up in device manager and windows correctly identifies the drive as "philips dvd cdrw". thanks for any ideas, i'm afraid its hit the end of the road Sad

When I see this, I swap the drive out and see if the problem vanishes. It saves people a lot of time and money.

dialdude,

Are you trying to access the data from
the CDs' in Windows Explorer?

If not then the application you are attempting
to use is at fault.

If so the the
device may have rolled over and died or
Laser may be dirty or
Needs firmware upgrade.
