Drive Order

Mar 4, 2011 7:50AM PST

In Disk Utility, what determines the order of drives listed?
Sometimes, the primary hard drive is first then the second internal one but it changes. When and why? The Finder has it in order while the disk utility doesn't at this time.

Not sure what determines the order

in Disk Utility but it really does not matter.

Time to start worrying is when DU or Finder does not include a disk in the list. Happy

The order in which they respond

The order in which they respond is what determines the order. So, say you have two drives... One is your main drive, another is for time machine backups. If you load DU while the time machine drive is doing a backup, it will obviously be slower to respond. But if it's idle, and the other drive is busy with something, then the order will change again.

But like already said, the order doesn't really matter. There's absolutely no significance to the order.
