Question

Dreamweaver FTP problems

Jun 15, 2012 1:13PM PDT

I am using Dreamweaver CS5 to build a website for my church and it is giving me errors when attempting to connect directly to the site via the site manager.

It will connect, and immediately disconnect. Sometimes I can get it to stay connected for 2 or 3 seconds, long enough to upload the HTML file, but then it poops.

The error reads:
The connection to the remote host has been lost. Click refresh to reconnect.

On clicking "OK," I then get another error window:
An FTP error occurred - cannot get server folder information. Dreamweaver encountered an internal data error. Please try the operation again.

I do, but about 1 out of 15 attempts will result in a 2-3 second connection then it errors out again.

I have been out of the web dev game since I got out of school and started a little different career path into security, so I really am behind the times on a lot of tech. Am I doing something wrong? My provider didn't specify a port or anything outside of the basic info (address, user ID, password). I am having this error on 2 different providers (one for testing on my host, one for the actual church's host)

If you're having this problem

with two providers, this points to a fault with the software. As R. Proffitt suggests, the next thing to try is to login with those credentials using an actual FTP client. You can try something like FileZilla (works on both PC and MAC).

If the problem is solved with FileZilla, it's Dreamweaver. If the problem isn't solved, it's something to do with your Internet connection i.e. firewall/router.

I have used an FTP client.

They work fine. I would like the convenience, however, of editing the files directly in Dreamweaver then saving them directly to the server. As opposed to downloading, editing, saving, and uploading. It is also easier to manage duplicate/obsolete data using Dreamweaver.

Right, I wasn't suggesting

you permanently use a FTP client, we are merely troubleshooting the problem and attempting to narrow down exactly what the issue is. If you're saying that you recently tried a FTP client and it worked, but Dreamweaver at this point still doesn't, then you know that it's in fact a problem with Dreamweaver.

Anyway, now that the issue is isolated, take a look at this troubleshooting info from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/kb/troubleshoot-ftp-problems-dreamweaver-cs4.html (of which some of the things we already tried and eliminated, but there are additional recommendations).
