Drag and drop causes Windows Explorer to crash

Nov 22, 2004 7:17PM PST

When trying to move files or folders around WITHIN my computer, anything larger than about 40Kb causes Windows explorer to crash. I can write 650Mb to a CD, download stuff off the net etc etc, with no problem, but as soon as I try and move stuff (the cotent of a floppy for example) onto my hard drive the computer displays the messgae that 'Explorer has caused an error in <unknown>. Explorer will now close.' And it closes. I have to reactivate 'Active Desktop' and essentially start from scratch.
The computer runs an Athlon 1250MHz CPU, has a single 512Mb RAM chipset, and is running W98/Me from a clean install with genuine discs on a (twice-checked before intall)120Gb HD. Net assess is via AOL.

I have a 'spare' 40Gb HD which I could use to start again, but I really don't want to have to go through setting a computer up all over again from scratch. Anyone got any bright ideas for a fix? Finding a solution on the web has been frustratingly unproductive so far... unless I'm putting in the wrong keywords.

With thanks,

Chris Beeching

Uninstall that software and try again.

Chris,

No guarantees here and I'm not sure what you've done before this, but I've run into situations where the "Active Desktop" was actually causing the problem. Start by changing the desktop background to something basic like "NONE". Then try installing the most recent graphics driver for your system. Then if you're running your screen resolution extremely high, try reducing that a little.

Next, reduce some of the current onboard program conflicts by cleaning up the computer and shutting down some of the unnecessary start up programs using the links below. It may take a while to follow these steps but it should make the computer run smoother.:

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.
