i,ve just installed a usage meter as was told going well over 2gb bandwidth per month. turned on DU Meter connected to internet had nothing else running but the meter said i was downloading 1.65MB and uploading 367.4KB in 14 minutes.......... what is uploading and downloading from my computer if im not even looking at anything???????? sorry if question is totally stupid but seems to me paying to go on 2GB broadband is a waste of time but i done the usage calculator but using 18GB per month somehow. can anyone help or am i just being totally thick.

Some OSes and some applications have automatic update features. Some OS patches run many hundred megabytes.

after you have identified the legitimate "auto-updates" that are moving back and forth, run a spyware and virus scan. Those little beasties are designed to run invisibly in background while doing their dirty work using your high-speed line.

i have windows xp home edition. so how do i find out whats supposed to be running and what isnt i thought if i left connection running without checking emails or opening internet explorer i wouldnt be using any of my usage allowance.......... so now i am feeling totally stupid for not knowing anything much at all.

Block everything at first and turn off XP's autoupdates. Same for other items such as your antivirus. Set it to once daily...
