A file sent from your family could range from a text document to a video, so it's hard to tell what program you require. Try saving the file to disk, right-clicking it, selecting "properties," and let us know what it says by "Type of File." Also, if there is an extension after the file name, such as .txt, it will help in determining the type of file. If you can't find out any information that way (to relay to us), your only option would be ask your family and friends what type of file it is, and what program you need to open it in.
Hope this helps,
John
