DownloadMusicInc.com - is this a bogus site?

Jan 12, 2007 4:54AM PST

Hi. I was searching for a good legal music service and came across this site : DownloadMusicInc.com
They claim they were voted the #1 music download site "as seen on CNET, MTV, Yahoo, etc." I did a search on CNET and couldn't find anything regarding this site!
Does anyone know anything about it? Their service looked good to me, but I became suspicious when I tried to exit and a popup appeared offering me a better deal that was only good until midnight.
Any help or input would be appreciated.

How do they get away with it?
Jan 12, 2007 5:49AM PST

How do they get away with claiming they were voted #1 by CNET and these other companies? Also, strangly enough I just noticed the advertisement on the top of this page from TheBeaconReview.com - That is where I found out about DownloadMusicInc.com !
Anyway, thanks for the input.

I am an intelligent person and I signed up for this great service and the great price that was going to expire at midnight. As soon as I sent my credit card number, I started thinking this didn't seem right so I did some checking and there's a lot of these with similar names that are nothing but scams. One article said if I website doesn't let you in to look around and see what's available then it's most likely a scam. I immediately told them I wanted my money back and that I would not download anything from their site. They agreed to refund my credit card within 5 business days on Jan 2. It's now Feb 1 and they still haven't done it so I'm doing a credit card dispute. I have cancelled that credit card and gotten another one. It's funny because in the response email that came from my second request to refund the credit card it says that they are experiencing a large number of fraudulent charge backs on credit cards and they WILL prosecute as this is very damaging to their company's reputation!
It's too bad these companies can get away using logos from reputable businesses to make themselves look legit. I know I've learned my lesson.

Hi I just made a call to my bank and the lady who answered ( very nice person ) told me that I should send notification to the bogus site asking for my money back and then when they ( the bogus site ) tell me that my money will be returned to my account in so many days and if it isnt back in my account in those so many days then I go into the bank and then we do a dispute.

Would really appreciate a reply!

The beacon review.com & downloadmusicinc.com are both scams.
Feb 5, 2007 9:30PM PST

I also allowed myself to be missled by the trustworthy looking old man Joseph Donahue at the "beaconreview.com". I payed the $44 at "downloadmusicinc.com" and was given a user name and password, and allowed access to the members area that only amounted to a place that you downloaded either "cabos" or "frostwire". The "cabos" did not work, but the "frostwire" did. Since downloading "frostwire", i no longer have to go to "downloadmusic.com for anything. You just open "frostwire" from your desktop, thats when i realized i was ripped off. I payed $44. to downlaod software that is free directly from "frostwire". Live and learn, i'm going to dispute it on my credit card and see if they dismiss the charges.

dispute against download music inc
Feb 5, 2007 9:42PM PST

I am wondering if I should send yet another e-mail to download music inc and let them know that I filed a dispute w/my bank against them , or if I should just let the bank handle it, I dont want them (download music inc ) packing up there stuff and going into hiding. I hope everyone who paid money into that corrupt company gets all of their money back. I will keep you posted on what happens

dispute against download music inc.
Feb 7, 2007 6:39AM PST

They still haven't credited my credit card even after my second request for them to do it but I can show the credit card company that I at least tried... They sent me another email saying they were looking in to it. I really don't think they're going to go into hiding because this has to be way too profitable for them to continue to do this. Other info about scams I found showed similar names like musicdownload.net, myipodownloads.com, pspblender.com, etc. and I wonder if they're all the same company(?. After I realized what an idiot I was I looked up eDirectSoftware since that's what it said the credit card transaction would show and they were listed on pricegrabber.com. There were numerous 5 star ratings, however, I noticed a lot of them were from "anonymous" and think it's probably someone from these organizations skewing the ratings. The 1 star ratings indicated that the software was not legitimate or was for educational purposes, problems with orders not being shipped, with credit cards being charged monthly in addition to the original charge, and all sorts of problems that indicate this is a very crooked company. If I remember correctly their address is conveniently listed in Canada.
Although I'm sorry so many others got taken in too, I do feel a little better knowing that I wasn't the only oneHappy

dispute
Feb 8, 2007 5:06AM PST

Well I decided to check out download music and their F&Q section and here is what I found:DownloadMusicInc offers one of the most generous money-back guarantees in the industry. We offer an unconditional 8-week guarantee, which means if you don't like our service after 8 weeks, you can send us an email and demand a refund on the spot. Our customer service policy is also another unparalleled leader. With live support during regular business hours, and a guaranteed email response tim 24 hours or less when we are away, you'll never be left in the dark on anything. Well I wrote them another letter and in it I basically stated that since they couldnt be courteous and answer any of my e-mails that I am not waiting 8 weeks to get my money back and that I already filed a dispute against them at my bank.

DownLoadMusicInc.com rip-off
Mar 5, 2007 7:13AM PST

I was taken in by the thought of saving money on music and when I seen that DownLoadMusicInc was a partner with PayPal I got a false sense of security. After joining and finding out what this was really all about, I requested a refund. I rec'd an email stating that they took refund requests very seriously and told me I would recieve my refund but wanted to know why. I explained to them that I am on a very slow dial-up connection and am unable to download songs without getting disconnected, so please refund my money.Well days and days went by with no reply, so I filed a complaint against them with thier partner, PayPal. Guess what? PayPal must be in on the scam because they informed me they could do nothing to get my refund. I can't believe how hard it is to find someone or company you can trust!

Any problems with frostwire?
Feb 7, 2007 6:51AM PST

So did frostwire cause any problems with your computer with viruses, spyware, etc and does it work okay? I'm really leary about what I download onto my computer and certainly don't want to make matters worse. The credit union that issued my credit card said that this transaction couldn't be stopped because I willingly made it and willingly gave them my credit card number but that it certainly could be disputed. They said the first step was to notify them that I wanted my money refunded, which I had already done prior to notifying them. I think I'll be okay since they did send me an email saying that they would refund the credit card within 5 business days and then didn't do it. Although I don't want to pay the $44.,if I have to I will to. My main concern was that these folks now had my credit card number and could put all kinds of charges on there that I didn't make. I'm thinking a lot of people that get scammed like this just chalk it up to experience and don't bother to try to get their money back so I'm sure it is very profitable to these guys and only a few malcontents like us complain and take actionHappy

frostwire seems to be working good and hasn't seemed to have effected my computer in any way exept some pop ups seem to get through.. although i can't be sure that this is from the frostwire. Let me know if you end up getting your money back from the scam.

The Beacon Review and Download Guide Online
Feb 11, 2007 10:52AM PST

The Beacon Review page featuring Joseph Donahue is very similar to another page called Download Guide Online at http://downloadguideonline.org/Music_Review.php. The latter page features a guy named Dr. Ben Gary. Just like Joseph Donahue "talks" on his page from the bottom right corner of the screen, Dr. Ben Gary talks on his page from the same corner. Both pages rate three sites highly while considering other, unnamed ones scams (with the word "SCAM" shown in all caps at both sites). On both pages, DownloadMusicInc.com is rated the highest and Napster is rated third. The 2nd place site differs between the two, though.

But wait, there's more:

I got curious about this "Beacon Review" and searched for it on Google. The only web page under this domain reviews and ranks get rich quick web sites. Someone named "James Caldwell" is featured on this page - and he bears a strong resemblance to "Joseph Donahue". Both are described as being 63 years old and from Florida.

Lesson Learned
Feb 20, 2007 3:52PM PST

Hello all,
Well, looks like I got took. I'll dispute with cc company, but will just consider this a cheap lesson about buying another "service" off the net. I'm usually very sharp and catch these things before they are a problem...not this time. They got me just like they got y'all. As they are using CNET's name in their false advertising...and considering CNET's influence and presence in the internet world...can/will CNET help us out in any way? Perhaps CNET should contact this company for falsly stating CNET support, etc. I realize CNET cannot go after everyone that fraudulently claims to have an award or association with CNET...but, considering this is, from my viewpoint, a fairly large issue, I'd sure appreciate any help CNET could give me/us. Just a thought. Good luck to all.

I hate to hear that you were scammed by downloadmusic.om... Good luck in your dispute. I have to say thank you for posting this information, as I was about to purchase that lifetime membership deal, when an alarm went off and made me research them before giving them my money. That's when I came upon this site with your postings. I am so glad I got here before becoming downloadmusicinc's next victim!!! So. again I say thank you and good luck.

I also am grateful for the warning. Although I see that BeaconReview.com is a CNET sponser and their advertisement is listed above all these warnings. Too bad CNET allows them to advertise on their website.

Thanks for saving me!

DOWNLOADMUSIC.COM
Feb 28, 2007 2:41PM PST

All,
To the best of my knowledge, CNET does not have any association with this site, nor does it endorse the claims made by the site. The downloadmusic.com operation is so very painfully, obviously fraudulent. I'm happy for each and every person that reads this PRIOR to buying ANYTHING from downloadmusic.com. They are also operating a similar scam for video downloads. BUYERS BEWARE.

Anybody interested in a class-action lawsuit? Leave message on board. Thanks.

HEY, LOOK WHO IS SPONSERING THIS FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feb 28, 2007 2:55PM PST

All,
Just looked down at bottom of this page to see sponsers. Among the sponsers are the beacon review and several other scam sites. What's up with that?!?!?!?!?!? CNET... A moderator for this forum called them spammers...and yet you take their money for advertisements?

It's Google Syndication...
Mar 3, 2007 11:05PM PST

The large banner advertisements are hand-selected, so to speak, by the Cnet advertising department, so they are trustworthy. The text-based ads from Google Syndication, however, are another story. Google has a VERY poor reviewing policy, so they frequently accept money to advertise fraudulent and illegal companies. Cnet has a filter in place to remove pornography and others based on keyword, but at this time it doesn't filter out potential scams. We all hope a resolution can be worked out by the Cnet execs in the near future. For the time being I would suggest simply ignoring anything that comes from Google Syndication.

Regards,
John

John,
My mistake. Thanks for the heads up. Any idea if CNET is planning to take action against this company for false use of CNET name in endorsement? Just curious. There are several of us that have been scammed by this downloadmusicinc.com company. Thanks!

I don't know if Cnet is considering legal action in this or any related matter, but the Cnet administration has been informed of the issue and reviewing the options in regards to sponsorship. Here's hoping for the best.

Got my credit card refunded!!!
Mar 1, 2007 7:49AM PST

Hey all. After my dispute letter, the credit card company has taken the charge off my account and show a "provisional refund" by edirectsoftware. So at least I won't have to pay interest either!

I, too, looked for information on this company prior to signing up but couldn't find anything, so it's good to get the word out since it appears they change the name ever so slightly so when doing a search it won't show up. I've heard the Federal Trade Commission might be a good place to complain to. I've also heard of a webiste called Bad Business Bureau or something like that where people can list names of bad companies and from now IF I ever do business with any company again on the internet I will be checking out that website. (Even AOL is on it.)
Good luck to you all.
