Downloading Problems

Jun 1, 2005 3:37PM PDT

Something (perhaps a hidden file?) is preventing the following from occurring:

1) I can only download any photos as .bmp files (I could download .jpg and .gif before, but now I have no alternative except to download them in .bmp).

2) I cannot connect to .wav files on the internet (e.g. at Geocities.com). I can play .wav files on my computer without accessing the internet but when I try to play .wav files that have been uploaded, I cannot connect with them. Further, if I am emailed a .wav file, something changes the name of the file as I try to open it and I cannot open it.

I have run my anti-virus program and nothing shows up, but I was told by someone at Microsoft that it sounds like a virus is preventing these functions. I searched for any viruses but did not find one.

Do you know anything about this? I am using Windows ME and Explorer 6.0. Perhaps I only need to change some designations on a menu somewhere?

canadayork, For problem Number 1 try deleting your Temporary Internet Files which will usually correct the problem as the info at the link below shows.

For problem Number 2 open Outlook Express/Tools/Options/Security tab and uncheck ''do not allow attachments to be opened or saved etc.'', click Apply/OK

And have you checked for malware with Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta or Spybot? Some of those programs can also alter how your computer works, though they're not viruses or trojans, strictly speaking. Have you installed any photo-editing software or other software that deals with .jpg and .gif files, and may have somehow changed the options on your browser? And have you looked at your browser options/preferences settings?
