Downloading problem

Sep 28, 2004 4:24AM PDT

I want download Everest Home Edition, the successor to Aida 32. But when I am at the site for downloading and click to download, I get that window asking me if I want to do it and I click affirmative. Then that window disappears but the usual one showing the downloading process does not appear. So I still have the Everest webpage for the download on my screen. The only indication that something is happening is that the MS flag in the upper right hand corner continues to wave. That goes on for several minutes and I close the webpage because I don't know if there is any downloading going on or not.

I previously went to a major geek site that said I could download Aida 32 and I got the same result.

Could someone tell me what is going on?

Please change the flag to a Firefox or Mozilla one and see if that helps.

GrandPaw,

Win XP SP2 installed new security features.

Know as the Information Bar. It will block anything that appears to be a threat. (Another reason that I stoped using IE6)

From the HELP file:

When will I see the Information Bar?

If Internet Explorer default settings are on, you'll see the Information Bar when a Web site tries to:

Install an ActiveX control on your computer.
Open a pop-up window.
Download a file to your computer.
Run active content on your computer.
Run an ActiveX control on your computer in an unsafe manner.

AND

Why does Internet Explorer block some file downloads?

Internet Explorer will block a file download when it appears that you have not requested the file. This can happen when:

A Web site tries to download files to your computer without your permission.
You requested a file but the download did not start soon enough.
This is done to help protect your computer from file downloads that you might not want or know about.

M/S is now protecting you from yourself.

As Bob P said try Firefox or on your next download look for the Information Bar, click on it for options

Grandpa, just a check..
Sep 28, 2004 6:12AM PDT

For reasons unknown to me, seems sometimes the Download indicator will open minimized. I use a Download Manager called FreshDownload, which works fine for me, but it does open the progress indicator minimized. No big deal, since you can click on it and watch the progress if you want.
You may want to check the same thing. After you click to download, and your "flag is waving", and your modem connection icon indicates activity, just check your Status Bar. If you see something there that says Downloading......, just click on it to see progress, and maybe where it is downloading to.
Of course this may not be your problem, but a very easy check.

Solved by Firefox

(NOTE: I just posted this experience in Browser, having forgotten this thread that I started. Sorry about that.)

With Firefox, the download went fine. Additionally, it was suggested in another thread that I download a couple of MS Knowledge Base article. Using IE, all I could get on my screen was the title to the articles, and that after a considerable waiting period. When I switched to Firefox, I got the articles pronto.

Thanks for the input, Bob, billzhills and Ray.

Grandpaw,

Obviously, something is wrong with IE. Maybe a repair helps, maybe IEFIX helps, maybe it's infected by spyware or the like.
But I would surely advice to keep IE in working order, or you won't be able to go to Windowsupdate for XP security patches. Which might bring you insolvable troubles in the long run.
