The problem with "free" music is that
Nov 11, 2011 10:25PM PST

all music is copyrighted.
Owning a CD, or similar, does not give you the legal right to share it with someone else.
Bearshare, a peer to peer sharing site that is best avoided, connects together thousands of computer users who share their music.
Problem is, it is not theirs to share.
Avoid that site as it is also a viruses and malware (not for the Mac, for Windows).

Thanks for the advice, mrmacfixit. I wonder why downloading 'free' music is not a problem with the mtv link you gave me but it is for the others mentioned. I am not being argumentative; I really would like to know. How would I be able to tell if it was legal from one site to another? If I had never found CNet to ask and just did a search, I would be clueless as to whether or not this was OK.
I can't remember how I found CNet. I'm just glad I did and now have a reference to go to.
Thanks again,
Rita
