Downloading from pre-firewire 3CCD camcorder

Mar 14, 2005 2:55AM PST

I have an old Panasonic 3CCD camcorder that does not have a digital hookup, although the video quality is great. I'm going to be getting a new computer with lots of RAM and HD space and I'd like to start editing on my computer.

I'm assuming I can just use any camcorder with a firewire connection (i.e., not necessarily a 3CCD unit) to transfer the video I've recorded with the 3CCD camera without any degradation in quality. Am I wrong?

Why not?

Just asking. Why isn't the model number in your post?

It could have helped others comment about it rather than have to ask this question.

Because

The reasons I didn't include it are (a) I just thought of it at here at work, am not sure what the model number is and don't have the camcorder with me to check; and (b) it didn't occur to me that it was particularly relevant -- it seems like an issue that would be common to any set of two camcorders, one with 3 CCDs and no digital output and one 1 CCD with digital hookup.

My uneducated guess is that whatever information captured by the 3CCDs and recorded in digital form on tape gets transferred to the computer even if the camcorder reading the tape and sending it to the computer has only 1 CCD. But if educated people know better, I'd like to know about it.

If the tape plays in another camcorder with firewire, you've found your answer.

Next time, come a little more prepared so the forum can give you all the answers...
