General discussion

downloading from Comcast DVR to PC running XP

May 30, 2007 3:31AM PDT

Can someone out there help with this?
I plugged the DVR into the computer with a serial port but when it comes up it gives me a wizard that looks like you are linking two computers (which is not the case) and it asks you to be running the wizard on both computers.
Do I have to go out and buy a networking hub or is there some software that I need to download our recorded programs from our DVR to our PC?
Help!!!

Serial port is too slow for video transfer.Let's do the math
May 30, 2007 3:45AM PDT

A PC Serial Port tops out at 115,200 bits per second. Your average 1 hour mpeg file is 1 gigabyte. So how long if we disregard any packet or extra "bits"?

I get over 24 hours to do such a transfer.

No one will be doing this with a serial port.

For this discussion here's what a PC Serial Port is defined as -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_port

Okay, so no to the serial ports... would a USB to USB

Thanks Bob for the response!
Okay, so I will say a big no to the serial ports... would a USB to USB connection work?
Or do I have to buy the $120 contraption that says that it will capture the video and convert it to MP2 format?
Thanks again!

USB would work IF!!!

If they issue drivers, tell you how and software too. USB 2.0 is 480 megabit so the transfer time is reasonable to some.
