Clarification Request
AVG free antivirus
Jan 6, 2012 4:29AM PST

When I try to download this free anti virus system, it states to click Download. Then Run - but instead I get a notice that it is a binary file. When I try to Save the file it asks me to insert a USB or other external device to try and save the file. Cannot be saved on the Media directory. You may save it to a USB file.
A new computer just bought with Windows 7 on (I've used XP only before) - can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Truth is I don't understand the computer yet!!! Thanks.

to post this in the AVG forum here; http://forums.cnet.com/avg-forum/

Be sure to provide the web site address of this download so that the AVG experts can have a look to see if it is genuine or not.

By the way, never select "Download and Run". It's dangerous to do that.

Answer
That's a Browser setting

That's a browser setting depending which browser you are using.

It is often suggested that this way is the safest way. For example say you visit a web site that automatically sends you a file without you knowing, and it downloads and runs (executes) in the background. How can you scan that for viruses before it runs?

I always Save, scan, then run it if my anti-virus says it is clear.
