downloaded openoffice and need Java (J2SE)

Sep 7, 2005 12:42PM PDT

I have Windows 98SE and protected well with my applications - but I need Java Runtime environment to be able to access all the bits in openoffice.
I find Java in Explore/windows but cannot tell what it is when I look at properties.I do not have the 'teacup' on my desktop and Java does not show in start/programs.
I had tried to download specifically the J2SE from Sun but all that happens is the popup showing it to download just keeps going and does not finish.
I tried to download windows installer as I read I needed that...when it finished it told me I already had it.
Many times of trying different things on the Sun site I get "The page cannot be displayed".I tried detect network settings here...and get nowhere.
I went into tools on my browser then internet options
and then advanced, I ticked the Java console disabled (requires restart) and also Java logging enabled.
It doesn't make any difference -other than before I did that I got page cannot be displayed for even downloading.
Looking at the java folder in explore it has classes/packages/trustlib/javalog.
Any ideas anyone?
Thank you
Mandy

Mandy, Check For Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine ....
Sep 8, 2005 3:00AM PDT

...like this:

Cllick on Start-Run, type ''command'' (without the quotes), then click on OK. When the command line window loads, type ''jview'' at the flashing cursor, then press the ''Enter'' key. You should then see a display that starts with: ''Microsoft Java Command-Line Loader for Java Version. 5.00.XXXX.'' The most recent version available is 5.00.3810. If that version is displayed, then you already have a basic version of Java that should work for you.

If the last four letters do not indicate ''3810, then please click on the link below and download and install that version.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~smuller/VMSite2/msjvm3.htm

Once it's installed, then open the Internet Options link from within the Control Panel, click on the "Advanced" tab then look to the "Microsoft VM" section, and make sure the box next to "JIT Compiler for virtual machine enabled" has a CHECK mark in it.

Although this is an older version of Java which isn't as secure as the newer Sun versions, it should allow you to access the Sun Java site and download the newest version there.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to take so long in answering Grif....

Been - and still am - distracted with other problems here! But upon following your instructions , 3810 is already in the msdos prompt, so no problems there now.I just thought the 'teacup' icon should/would be on the desktop.
Thanks Grif,
Mandy

Not to worry. At least you responded to Grif. A number of posters never do get back. Wonder why?
