Downgrading Vista to XP with Dell Laptop

Sep 20, 2007 4:56AM PDT

Hi, I'm having trouble downgrading my Inspiron 1720 from Vista Home Premium 32b to XP Pro with SP2

I put in the CD, and restarted my computer, but after I got to the boot from CD screen it said that it couldn't install because there were no hard drives detected

how do i fix this?

XP won't install.
Sep 24, 2007 2:02PM PDT

Hi, I tried installing XP but got this error message in the installation window:
Setup couldn't copy this file:
cmnicfg.xml
ipcfg.xml
osinfo.xml
potscfg.xml
pppcfg.xml
xmlp_bdg.xdr
xmlp_bec.xdr
xmlp_beu.xdr
xmlp_ecp.xdr
xmlp_ecu.xdr
xmlp_fcd.xdr
xmlp_fcw.xdr
xmlp_hlp.xdr
xmlp_loc.xdr
xmlp_mas.xdr
xmlp_mcc.xdr
xmlp_mcu.xdr
xmlp_mpc.xdr
xmlp_mpu.xdr
xmlp_reg.xdr
xmlp_ssd.xdr
xmlp_wiz.xdr
xmlp_wp.xdr
After I skipped these files and entered the Windows installation screen gui, I got a system error message. I was then forced to restart. So, I can't use my laptop at all. I was wondering if there's any way to make a bootable iso with the files that didn't copy. Otherwise, how else can I fix this?

I am having the same problem!

I am having the same problem as ericchan.
I got the same errors for cmnicfg.xml, ipcfg.xml, etc etc

And after restarting, an error occurs and I'm forced to restart over and over again. The error included something about not able to to access \asms folder.

Can anyone help?

alright i managed to fix it

i don't remember where exactly, but after you choose to install XP and get past the EULA screen, they should ask you which hard drive / partition you want to install in. choose which one you want, then it SHOULD ask you if you want to format the drive. say yes to this. now all those files SHOULD copy fine
