Dowloding flash cards-portable devices?

I am wondering about downloading video from my Sanyo FH1 flash cards to something like an external hard drive. I thought it might be much more economical to transfer video to a hard drive than to buy a bunch of SD cards. Particularily when on vacation or an extended shooting session where you can't access a computer easily this might save some money. Is it possible to do this?
