General discussion

Donald Rumsfeld, The CIA, NSA, and alphabet agencies

May 8, 2006 5:50PM PDT

Is there some new kind of scandal in the USA at the moment?

Caught a glimpse of Donald Rumsfeld on one of
the American news services and he looked like
he was yelling at people asking questions.

And they made mention of the FBI nd CIA in turmoil or falling apart.

Are they really in such a bad state?

What is really going on here guys? or have the
news services only spun their version of events?

It looked like they were trying to make it look
like he lied about the Iraq war...

Rumsfeld was being questioned by a 27 yr CIA employee who thinks every employee should "leak" info to discredit the current administration. He has a leftward agenda. Head of CIA, Porter Goss, resigned unexpectedly Friday. Today, the 3rd in command is said to be caught up in some kind of scandal, he resigned. Pres. Bush nominated an Air Force General, Hayden(sp?), to take over CIA. He was supposedly in charge of the NSA's warrantless electronic eavesdropping. The Pres. is getting hammered in the polls and the Beltway version of musical chairs goes on. Interesting side note, Tony Snow, a Fox news host and former speech writer for Reagan is now press sec. for White House. It is said he would only take the job if he could be involved in policy making, not just polcy reporting.

I had heard in an interview

that Goss had been trying to get rid of a bunch of those left wing trouble-makers who think it's their duty to be the fourth wing of the government (my paraphrasing) and as such, to do what they can to knock the president down.

The clip I saw was on the Today show and Rumsfeld
looked like he might burst a vein at any moment.

That CIA critic, Ray McGovern, is quite the lefty loonie..

One of Mother Sheehan's cronies I believe.

NOTE: Rumsfeld waved them off and requested that McGovern be allowed to stay.

A bit different from shouting down your opponents, eh? I doubt Rummy felt threatened or nervous.

And Rumsfeld did not answer his question.

Other news programs showed Rumsfeld making the statements that the "leftist loonie" said were made by Rumsfeld.

He may be a "leftist loonie" but on this point he was correct and telling the truth.

Where are the lies? Are you parsing words between "we know" and "we think we know"? What a hoot.

The guy IS a nut; no denying that.

here's a hoot, parse this

QUESTION: You said you knew where they were Tikrit, Baghdad, northeast, south, west of there. Those are your words.

We know where they are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat."

Six months after the invasion, on Sept. 10, 2003, Rumsfeld revisited the WMD issue in remarks at the National Press Club

"I said, 'We know they're in that area,' " referring to the weapons. "I should have said, 'I believe we're in that area.

So 6 months AFTER the original statement Rumsfeld realized he misspoke.

So he did make a statement that wasn't true, and 6 months later realized, and NOW 3 YEARS after the fact, he is still denying what he said the first time and forgetting what he said 6 months later.

Oh big woop!
May 9, 2006 2:06AM PDT

Really, that is just silly.

He admitted he misspoke, and then 3 years later he forgot. That's a lie? HE ADMITTED HE MISSPOKE.

Sometimes it seems like lefties consider it a lie if yo make a mistake or disagree with them. Didn't McGovern lie when he said the war was unnecessary? I certainly think so.

He wouldnt put it past Bush to 'manufacture' a terrorist act with bombs or what have you. I bet he believes the conspiracy theories about 9/11, that Bush was behind it.

After it ended my wife commented on how lucky we are that things aren't like that anymore. I replied, "Don't be so sure."

This thread is proof I'm right. Dare to criticize this Administration and you're a "subversive" or a "left-wing loony." "May haves" and "might somedays" become evidence against people.

It's sickening.

You should take a good hard look at who and what McGovern is before you judge. Look it up and TRY TRY TRY to have an open mind.

It's got nothing to do with "dare to criticize this Administration".

- Collapse -
Why is it necessary?
May 10, 2006 4:55AM PDT

Why do people have to add ''nut'' or loonie'' when referring to ''right wing'' or ''left wing''?

Why not just say "someone with an opposing point of view"?

You know, without the insults?

LINK (that right-wing rag, the Washington Post)

The session took an awkward turn when witness Ray McGovern, a former intelligence analyst, declared that the United States went to war in Iraq for oil, Israel and military bases craved by administration "neocons" so "the United States and Israel could dominate that part of the world." He said that Israel should not be considered an ally and that Bush was doing the bidding of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

There's more but I don't have time to look now.

I am comfortable with the characterizations.

subject also very good, though pure documentary.

My personal favorite exchange is between McCarthy and Welch when Welch asks for the source of some piece of information, and McCarthy claims not to understand. Eventually Welch says "Well was it brought by a Pixie?" McCarthy looks amused and says he doesn't know what a Pixie is, meanwhile Roy Cohn is trying to get McCarthy not to pursue the point. Welch comes back with "Well Senator, I would say that a Pixie was a second cousin to a Fairy." at which point McCarthy goes all stone faced and Cohn tries to hide. Its wonderful what a good debater can do to an empty blow-hard. Tail Gunner Joe, scourge of the Coconuts on his little island. I don't know how many missions he really flew, but it wasn't many, but he did love sitting in the tail turret of the B-25 shooting them off the trees while safely back at base. It's in most of his biographies, except for the exculpatory and self serving ones.

What IS sickening ...
May 11, 2006 12:38AM PDT

... is the left's association with and promotion of an OUTRIGHT subversive. (And noted anti-semite to a degree worse than Sheehan, but who's keeping track)

Ray McGovern belongs to a group that ENCOURAGES agents to commit crimes against their country and reveal classified information to further their "anti-war" agenda TO THE DETRIMENT OF (BUT WHO CARES RIGHT?) OUR NATIONAL SECURITY.

He belongs behind bars actually, it's a testament to the UN-Gestapo like actions of this Administration that he is not!

My take is...
May 9, 2006 1:47AM PDT

....... it appears to be no more than a "turf" war.

From the coverage I have seen with different spins, I find myself agreeing with that.

The OSS (Office of Strategic Services) becaame the CIA, and the War Department the Department of Defense after WWII. Both have intelligence gathering capabilities and resonsibilities. Add to that the FBI and NSA(formeerly the Armed Forces Security Agency) , which also gather intelligence. Over the years these have not been prone to share their informatio. There have been more recent efforts to make them do so.

Some feel that Runsfeld is guarding his turf as to intelligence. There is a new nominee to head the CIA. he is an Air Force General who is now in NSA, and some feel he will lean toward the Department of defense. Other say he is an independent thinker, and is known to speak his piece. (Personally, I favoer his being confirmed. This is not the first time an active duty member has headed the CIA. And others have had military experience.)

But I know of no" scandals" involving any at this point in time. There has been a good bit of doubt as to the validity of intelligence prior to the Iraq . I agree that there is room for that doubt, but I don't believe it was intentional. Though we have satellites and othe hi-tech methods, intelligence on the ground is the mosty relable, and we lacked that.

There are people who are against any war. There are people who are against the Iraq war in general. . There are people who express dismay about the failed intelligence, thus want us out of Iraq. it's a mixed bag.

The protesters when Rumsfeld was speaking could be from any of those.

Those who stand before the press at news conferences are doing their job. They are there to make announcements and to answer questions that are not classified. They work for us.

then there shouldn't even BE a military, or a Secretary of Defense. I think that is foolish, but you are welcome to your opin

Be a nice world if there was no war or conflict, BUT there IS. And in a world where there is conflict an aggressor can easily take over and kill whomever he wants to unless there are forces arrayed to defend against that.

I should have not been as literal as I was
when I wrote the above posting.

Maybe if I had said the whole principle of war
is wrong, as opposed to just saying "war is wrong"

There are always other means such as sanctions and
cutting off supply routes.. I don't think we had
the right to invade Iraq and I think it's gonna be
a big long fight there....

- Collapse -
Always other means?
May 9, 2006 10:31PM PDT

Take this to a personal level. Killing someone isn't ever "good", but sometimes you have to do it in self defense. Other means to protect yourself include locking your door, alarms, etc.. Perhaps you will try to talk to your attacker and convince them to leave you alone? What if they don't?

We had every right to do what we did in Iraq. Europe didn't recover instantly from WWII either.
