Domain Registration and webhosting

Mar 25, 2007 1:29AM PDT

I am new to all of this. I want to host multiple domains, so I've chosen hostmonster to host my sites. My question is should I register
my domain names at another registrar or register them through hostmonster? Any comments on the pros and cons of either are appreciated.

Thanks,

You should do a little shopping but...

The domain fees are not entirely set by the host so you'll find the bottom fast.

What I would do is...

... register my domains somewhere else... like maybe GoDaddy (that's what I use). Why? Because I simply don't like the fact of one company controlling all my assets. So, if you have problems with your host or something, your domains are independently registerred and all you have to do is change your DNS and your domains are out of there.

I was thinking

Along those lines myself. Not putting all of my eggs in one basket.
I hear Godaddy is cheap, but I hear that they spam you a lot. I don't know if that is for the hosting or registration or both.

No spam for me

They send you notifications about your domain, when it expires, when you update something, and some deals... maybe a little bit in excess, but you can opt out on those once you have the account. Also, you can always mark them as spam and they won't come anymore either. Personally, I keep them enabled because they dont bug me and you never know what you're gonna miss. For the price, and the quality, I do recommend GoDaddy regardless.

Keeping your domains safe

You should consider recording your domain ownership with TROANN.com before you invest your time and money in it. It is very common for domains to get hijacked. With your domain recorded with TROANN you will have ownership title if it is hijacked or you want to sell it in the future. They also offer WHOIS masking and won't release your information as quickly as registrars do.

That appears to be your site.

Are you promoting your site here?

My bad; just read the rules.

My bad; just read the forum rules. But the message is the same. You should find out by asking lawyer forums and searching for problems that will come up because, assuming you have a business plan that will work, you will feel like you're more busy dealing with problems that could have been avoided at the beginning. Because most people don't know most of the problems, you'll need to spend a lot of time searching for information before you get started. For example, matching a business name you can get with domains you can get and then keeping others from getting your traffic.

You would have to be impartial about noting your site. That is I have to note my competition as well.

Impartial

That's very reasonable. I posted originally because there won't be any competition with these companies until their pending patents run their term. But I certainly will be more clear in the future.
