Doesn't See Blank DVD-R (or +R)

I've been having a terrible time with my Compaq R4000 Notebook. The DVD burner used to work...the CD burner does. But for some reason when I use burning programs they do not see a blank DVD.
Any idea how I can resolve this?
I doesn't matter what program I use. Even if there is only one program on at a time. It worked ONCE after reformatting the computer...but now, its not working at all. It burns CD's just fine.

My notebook is on XP sp2

but i don't get any of those error messages. It just says (when I'm in the program like Record Now, that there isn't a blank dvd in there and that I need to put one in - when there isinfact a brand new blank dvd in the drive)
It gave me that trouble when there was only one program on there and had only been one program on the computer for burning data.

It's Still Worth Trying...

The errors mentioned aren't always seen. Some types of burning software install those filters which prevent the driver from being seen.. Removing the filters allows the computer to recognize the drive although sometimes, the burning software needs to be reinstalled.

Hope this helps.
