The Specs show

that this player only supports MP3 and WMA.

There is no mention of AAC (MP4).

By the way, AAC is not an Apple format, although it is used by Apple for music tracks sold at the iTunes Store. It produces smaller files and better quality than MP3.

Advanced Audio Codec is an industry standard, also known as MP4.

actually

MP4 is a container format, doesn't mean the same as AAC
MP4 usually is used for videos
AAC is a audio stream that can be used on MP4 files but doesn't have to be

and the NWZ actually does support AAC and should also support ATRAC also that's been dropped with SonicStage

I thought he was talking about a different NWZ, my mistake on the support

You are correct,

I should have referred to it as MPEG-2 Part 7 and MPEG-4 Part 3, however it is most often referred to as MPEG-4 AAC, or AAC for short and not just as MP4.

My bad

The NWZ-s600 series does though

And it's only about $20 more expensive. Probably a better bet.
