Question

Does the order of 1 and 2 cable matter with WiFi?

Aug 26, 2018 10:57AM PDT

I bought an Intel 8265 WiFi chip.

Does it matter which order the connectors go in?

I currently have the 1 cable plugged into the 2 slot, and visa versa.

Will it make a difference?

I heard that one wire is 5 GHz and the other is 2.4 GHz, so you could be slowing it down by plugging a 5 GHz cable into a 2.4 Ghz slot.

Answer
Yes.

But it should not cause the card to die so give it a go, and then the other way. Use what works best.

PS. Edited to fix an error on my part.

Card to die?

Sorry, what?

What should cause the card to die?

I was pre-answering an oft asked question.

Sometimes the client will ask their worry question. That is, will my WiFi card die if I hook up the wrong antenna? In the case of run of the mill laptop and desktop WiFi cards, no.

OK

OK, so it was a typo. You wrote "it should" cause the card to die. You meant "shouldn't"

So which way do you think the cables should be?

Should the 1 cable go into the 1 slot, and the 2 cable go into the 2 slot.

Or is it the other way around?

I'll fix that.

Sorry that I messed that up.

As to the 1 to 1, 2 to 2, try it. Test it. Remember I always defer to the maker's installation instructions but I wanted (and failed) to note there has yet to be a card death (normal wifi cards) because the antenna was the wrong (wifi) antenna or unplugged.
