Question

Does playing games while updating video drivers cause issues

Basically what the title says:
Does playing games (having them open or actively playing it) while updating graphics drivers affect anything in a negative way, besides gameplay (obviously)? Like, can the update go bad, could it corrupt data of either the game or the driver, etc.?

I don't expect that to be the case but I'm just wondering.

Re: update video drivers

I think it can even be done while playing a game. I've never seen Windows Update (when set to update drivers) asking me to exit any program.

I had my resolution changing automatically during the update, but it all went back to normal.

I dont think so, you can play games while updating video drivers, if there is a need then system asks to close other applications while updating.

It Won't cause Any issues

Nope! It doesn't affect and can be done while playing the game. You can use the third-party Driver update program to do so in the background and you'll not face any issues. The only thing you'll notice while the update is ongoing is the change in resolution for a few moments.

Also, if you are expecting the improvements in the performance, then you have to restart the game otherwise you won't see any improvements.

Re: update video drivers

It won't corrupt your game so you shouldn't worry about that, but it's best to wait for the update to finish and reboot your system

Re: update video drivers

Some games will crash, as during this process drivers uninstall old version of it and install new version of it but between it when the drivers are removed screen flashes and if you were playing game it will also crash
