Resolved Question

Does my old freeview box with HDMI have HDCP?

Aug 20, 2014 8:24PM PDT

So I want to connect my Freeview box HD to my monitor, so then my monitor becomes a TV. However my monitor does not support HDCP. I thought I was screwed, but my freeview box is really old (It came out in 2009), which was before HDCP became widely used in consoles/set top boxes. This should mean my freeview box doesnt even have HDCP.

So will my freeview box work connected to my monitor?

Since HDMI mandates HDCP

There is no debating that any HDMI logo bearing devices mandate HDCP so I would not expect this to work with non-HDCP displays. Sure, try but there is nothing on paper to tell us this will work.

Why not try?
Since you didn't tell the specs of that old Freeview box, nobody knows. So asking here doesn't make much sense.

My freeview box is a Digital Stream DHR8205U. And I can't try it yet because my monitor has VGA input only. So before I buy an HDMI to VGA adapter from amazon, I need to know whether in theory it will work. The adapter could only work if my free view box didn't have HDCP (I think)

Can it be disabled in the settings?

I've seen that ability on some older Freeview equipment.
