Question

Does inserting the windows installation disc delete data?

Mar 4, 2015 1:56PM PST

Toshiba Laptop will not boot. it asks to repair by inserting the windows installation disc.

error: 0xc000000f

I have the windows installation discs/recovery but have not retrieved all the data yet. Will inserting the disc automatically delete all the data on the drive or will it simply attempt to repair the issue and keep the data on the drive? I am hoping to just get it operational to recover the data with least cost/time expense possible.

No

Typical repair disc or install disc will not delete data UNLESS you direct or mistakenly do so. A repair disc will provide 3 options, repair, restore or recovery of image or restore point or access recovery partition(or ask for it). A typical install disc if NOT a MS retail one, as in an OEM(Dell, Gateway, etc.) under its own rules differ slightly, thus it all depends. It's not going to hurt to see what your Toshiba provided install disc offers, a menu list should be displayed. In most cases they usually are the same just labeled from Toshiba. If you have a repair disc from some other source of the same OS type, that will work, know a friend to generate one for you? Now, you wish you made one when your PC was 1st gotten.

Update and question

Thanks, After restarting with the recovery disk in, I was able to boot to disk and I am at a gray screen that says select "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" or "System Recovery Options" Again, I do not want to proceed from here if it will delete all of my data. Will continuing from this point erase data?

Some have asked...

I am using windows vista. This is an actual 2 disc recovery and applications/driver disc set from Toshiba that came with the cpu.

A recovery disk is not "the windows installation disc."

These are two different dics.

So YES, if you proceed with a recovery disc, your files are at risk. Why not get those files out now? It's been kicked around how for decades. Here's a recent post:

Today we can use a more current issue and there is no learning of Linux involved.
