If you need a very close and file compatible Excel right now for no money, use OPEN OFFICE

http://www.openoffice.org

It's what I use.

There's also a freeware app from Microsoft called Excel Viewer (and Word Viewer and PowerPoint Viewer) that provide read-only support for Office files if you don't need to modify things at all.

Lee,

To answer your question.... Excel DOES NOT come with Windows. It installs as part of the Microsoft Office program family. You can purchase Excel separately or as part of various Office suites. (If you decide to purchase an Office suite, and because they are all slightly different, (Professional version, Small Business version, etc.), check them carefully to make sure your selection has the programs you want.)

As mentioned earlier by Bob, and Yew, there are other programs, (much cheaper, or free) that can be used to view or work with Excel file types.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone.
A friend of mine is in the process of selling her products online and has asked me to help, however, all work that will need to be done, from what she's said, will be done by using Excel. I do have the viewer, but that won't help her much, lol. I did a little research and the program seems quite pricey and wouldn't be worth my purchasing it.
I at least was able to create the graphics for her web page, business cards and brochures though.

Never used the FREE OpenOffice Bob advocates but have heard that id is a fine product. Disadvantage is that it is a fairly large download.

Go here http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/spreadsheet.html and take a look at the 602PC Suite Spreadsheet. MS Excel compatible (9x, 2000, XP) and saves in the Excel 95 format.

There are both Paid and Free Versions and the FREE version of the Suite is only a 14 meg download and unless your friend is using some of the newest features of MS Excel this should do nicely.

You could also go here http://www.store.yahoo.com/glob2000/losmmied9.html and get an OEM copy of Lotus SmartSuite 9.7 which will handle Excel formats through the XP version.

Ed is correct. As for excel is part of Microsoft's office suite program. You can obtain the excel viewer and implement it into other office suite applications, (I have it in use in Easy Office, Open Office for editing purposes of those spreadsheets). Whenever you load an office suite, it also includes those viewers to open the document, and the supporting format in the office suite allows editing of those documents. I have also obtained the Word Viewer, and power point viewers for additional robust usage of the current office applications on this system. ( I run Open Office, Easy Office, both create pdf documents, Corel Word Perfect Office suite 8, and Microsoft Works 6.0 with Word 2000 and it's conversion filters for work perfect document support, and allow me to use word perfect templates and documents to be edited in Word. Thos I found in the ORK (Office Resource Kit) on microsoft's site to provide these additional solutions to integrate applications and have them work with each other. Hope this is helpful to you and explain the use of program suites and why it loads it's viewers.
