Does an anonymous proxy like Ghost Surf Pro really work?

I have used and installed the above program which basically routes all my request for information, web pages, etc. via multiple servers as I understand it while hiding my true IP address. Are you basically safe from someone backtracking to you for the most part with this program or is it a false sense of security? Thanks.
