Document Scanning Sofware

I need to scan documents on a scanner and save them as PDF files. They are mostly color pages and most times several pages in a file. The file size must be reasonably small for sending by email. Is there any recommended free download which will do the job on a Win XP Pro laptop connected to a Lexmark X4550 All-in-One?

I know of no free software that will scan and save as a PDF automatically. However, you could use a free application such as PrimoPDF (available on download.com) to take the image files your current scanning software produces and convert them into a PDF, appending one page after the other. It can be tedious depending on the number of pages, but that is an unfortunate necessity at the price point.
