Doctor Jack Cassell Refuses To Treat Obama Supporters

Apr 2, 2010 11:33PM PDT

Misleading headline, as befits the Huffington Post, but....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/02/jack-cassell-doctor-refus_n_523076.html

Florida urologist Jack Cassell posted a sign on his office door reading, "If you voted for Obama ... seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your health care begin right now, not in four years."

Cassell, a registered Republican, quickly backpedaled in an interview with the Orlando Sentinel, but said he's perfectly happy to lose business over the sign. "I'm not turning anybody away, that would be unethical," he told the Sentinel. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

Everyone who still knows what that word means holds the US in ridicule now. Even the Russians know where we are headed, and laugh at us.

I don't know about that, but ....

For a lot of years, Medicare has made it hard for physicians to make private contracts with Medicare beneficiaries who want to go outside the Medicare system. I'm not 100% sure but I think THAT constraint on free choice has been around since the Reagan years. IIRC, it was tightened up a good bit under either Bush 1 or Clinton. I think it was also during the 1st Bush administration Medicare also began to put limits on billing that apply even for physicians who do not accept Medicare assignment.

IOW, there has been significant restriction of contracting privileges connected to the Medicare (and also CHAMPUS/TriCare) for YEARS under administrations from both parties.

Makes as much sense as refusing blood plasma because it was

invented by a man categorized in the South in 1950 as black. He was however treated following a car accident at a nearby hospital, though not successfully as he was too injured.

Although the Hippcratic Oath has fallen out of use, it would be nice if doctors could see their patients as needy human beings, despite race, creed or politics. Truthfully, the vast majority do. It is the very unusualness of this guy's behaviour that makes this an issue at all.

"The fact is, Drew did not develop blood plasma in any of its forms, nor did he perfect blood transfusion with blood plasma, as is sometimes claimed in the greater media." While Wynes noted that Drew's role was purely an organizational one, that "in no way detracts from Drew's actual accomplishments."

Comparing a doctor putting a sign on his door to "refusing blood plasma... etc." is, IMO a stupid and irresponsible comparison.
