docking station for notebook

I have never owned a notebook and would like to purchase one. Can you explain docking stations. Would I be able to connect a monitor, external hard drive, speakers, keyboard, mouse and printer to this thing.
where could I find more information

Most companies will offer docking stations for their notebooks if one is made. But no all notebooks have docking stations.

Targus is one company that makes universal docking stations. I have one and it works really well. Here is some additional information:
