Do you use GoDaddy for your hosting Needs ?

Oct 21, 2008 11:43AM PDT

Hello,

I have been using GoDaddy for many years. The primary purpose is - since they are a good registrar - which is reliable. At the same time they provide hosting as well. Yes, i have tried their hosting thinking that - GoDaddy is a good reliable - off course big company to deal with - BUT, their hosting standards are not that GOOD - but its the worst that i found ever. Why i had to say this :- There are severa reasons :-

1- It is very difficult to setup things like creating a database, user etc.
2- Their control is not easy to handle.
3- When click on the control panel - it takes a lot of time to open and after it is opened- again a lot of time is taken for various operations.
4- And when i try to updatemy site - i really feel lazy - its because it is hosted at godaddy - thinking that - i have to wait a lot of time behind it...

So, recently i had decided to with a new hosting company which is using a much better control panel - cpanel - it is reay fast - i love to access the control panel and update as often as i want.

Friends, i donno whats your thoughts on it - and whats your experience with Godaddy - please share it here - to let us know whether Godaddy is really good at hosting as well or - just as a Domain registrar.

Thanks

Very good here.

But our people are programmers. So all that stuff makes sense to them and I.

Today I run into people that never took so much as a seminar on computers and are very upset with how hard it is to make a web site. I guess it matters if you lived with the command line or not?

As to speed, seems fine here. Not as fast as local applications but acceptable for web based work.

Not exactly GoDaddy

I don't use GoDaddy directly, as in their site but I do through their sister sites reseller. It uses all the same fun stuff they have to offer.

In response to your complaints about interface/servers:

1) I find creating a database pretty straightforward. The only thing with databases through their interface is that in applications you can't use localhost, but have to put h2343mysql.secureserver.net or whatever the db server name is. Otherwise creating it is simple. Set it up, I do something else for a few minutes and come back and its done.

2) Again I find it without problem. Always used this control panel, so for me going to CPanel requires me to take longer to do stuff.

3) This can be true at times where you see slower load times. I haven't really found it to be too much for me, but I'm usually multitasking so as im going through the panel I am on other sites so I don't really notice.

4) Not sure what you are updating so often via the control panel on your site? I set up the site first time via control panel, then everything thereafter is using FTP to upload files and for maintenance.

That's my own experience. I host over 10 sites on the Deluxe hosting plan through Domains at Retail ( http://www.domainsatretail.com ) and those comments above are direct experiences I've faced over the last 5 years I've been creating sites on it.

Oh one thing that does get tricky with the hosting, is if you create an .htaccess file on your server, it can take up to an hour to take into effect for the first time. So when you set up a Wordpress blog, permalinks don't instantly work. Again, I just start writing my first blog post and by the time I'm done and ready it has updated.

Again, I don't use CPanel too often myself so I am just used to that interface and I find it takes me same time in CPanel to do stuff. I do know whenever I can't find something in CPanel googling it will give you a huge amount of answers, as its very common, which is good Happy

You can check out http://www.affordablesharedhosting.com, as it shows a number of hosts you can try out. Just remember on their they show Blue Host and HostMonster, but I'm sure they are the same company.

I've personally used HostMonster, NetFirms and Domains at Retail. I do have a client with HostPapa that has CPanel and it loaded up pretty quick. Might want to check them out too.

I agree with your criticism of godaddy hosting. I used them years ago and was frustrated with there whole setup. I mainly lunarpages for the majority of my sites and I'm very happy. Who did you end up going with after your experience with godaddy?
