Do you prefer brand-name or generic computers?

Do you prefer brand-name or generic computers?

Brand name (tell us why)
Generic (tell us why)
Either one, makes no difference
None, I prefer the ones I build myself (tell us why)

The one i build and branded
Apr 25, 2005 12:07AM PDT

Any of the choices would be suitable for any one, but i prefer the one i build because, some companies or generic products put a lot of BUILT IN components in the pc, while if i build it my self, i would choose the best part that are in the market, and i will know what is my pc made of.

Also if we put it on the other hand, i would also choose a BRANDED one because the company it self will try to give for its customers the best features and quality.

In conclusion, i would like to say that a person would be proud of himself that he assembled his computer and chose the parts that he will put it in his pc...

Thank.......

build my own computer

One advantage of building the computer yourself is that parts can migrate to the newer machine. The cabinet, dvd player, cd rom, sometimes memory, and hard drive can all be used in a newer system. This cuts down on costs by eliminating redundancy. Example- the floppy I currently use comes from an old 386 computer. It works fine and I see no need to replace it.

Custom Built Computers are Best
Apr 25, 2005 6:47AM PDT

I prefer the custom built computer. This frees you from getting what the store has. It can be as fast as you want with all the features you salivate for. You also do not have to worry about unwanted software being installed (like from a store bought PC).

The only time I would not recommend a custom built PC is when the person does not know what they are doing. Then, I would recommend going to the store.

Prefer Generic Computers
Apr 25, 2005 11:30AM PDT

Simple - - - Get each item I want and generally have higher value/reliability components than the brand name computers use. Don't need packaged software as I have what I want and upgrade as needed. Knowing how my units goes together, I generally have fewer problems than those who purchase branded computers.

Whatever floats your boat!

Brand names 4 me

Because we are exclusivly Mac users, it is not possible to assemble. But we save where we can. Always get minimum memory, big hard drive and reuse keyboards and screens. Just got a minimac and it was ordered with airport, bluetooth, big drive and no dvd burn on removable disks. There is a difficulty in getting an adapter for airport so I had to order it.

Supposedly the case is difficult for outsiders to open. It is a bit tricky , but my son did 2 of his and I followed the instructions and popped the case with no trouble. With only one memory slot, I removed some screws to allow the old chip space to be disengaged. Placing the new one and it was reassembled.

Did it pay? Apple wants over $300 for big memory. My chip cost 93 with postage. That buys a few tanks of gas in my book. Obviously it worked fine. And between us we have three 256 meg chips that can be used in several different Mac models. For regular machines we both change cpu's, add memory, add pci cards, etc. I have a 7500 that supports four monitors, or two monitors and all channel TV, depending on what is plugged in. The TV can be put on disk or just viewed. Not quite TIVO, but...

The brand name systems I have looked at use mostly basic "just get by" parts.

Have both

Perfer build your own. Agree with all, I know what is under the hood. Also have an HP. The HP I bought came with no CD's. Was preloaded. That is good and bad. Wife uses an E-Machine. Ok machine for the money.

A friend built my generic machine. Love it!

Compaq's and Gateways Family members have had both. Had problems from the start. Gateway has you over a barrell. Won't use a Gateway if you paid me for it.

Generic

I build them myself, this way I can choose the components
and get what I want, not what the PC company chooses.

I build it myself

I built my computers since i know myself.
It's just that i prefer to choose what i put inside. I like to buy the components I think fit better with what i do, mostly for my gaming set-up.
not to mention that it always ends up cheaper
