Question

Do you need antivirus for a mobile phone (Tracfone)?

Hello. I have a LG Rebel LTE smartphone (Tracfone). My McAfee subscription lets me download it to mobile devices. But I've been reading some websites that have said that McAfee can consume a lot of your phone's resources. Other sites have said that Internet security/antivirus is not as important for Android devices as it is for regular computers. I would ordinarily play it safe and download the McAfee, but this is a cheap phone and I don't want it to process any slower.

I use it for checking email, basic web searches, and for hailing Lyft/Uber rides.

Thanks for the tips!

Clarification Request
Here's my concern . . .

In reply to: Do you need antivirus for a mobile phone (Tracfone)?

When I surf the web from my PC w/ whatever browser I use, sometimes I click on websites that try to install, or try to get you to install, malware on your computer. But McAfee has saved me on several occasions.

How would Android prevent this kind of attack that, for me at least, is not uncommon?

Also, is your sense that McAfee is too much for a $37 LG Rebel Tracfone processing-wise?

Thanks again!

Drive by downloading is blocked in many ways on Android.

In reply to: Here's my concern . . .

So that's not happening today on Android so even if you had McAfee it won't stop owners that follow a link to some site to tell them to install an APK directly, etc.

Since drive by downloading on Android doesn't work, you still have the social engineered attacks which McAfee can't stop.

Today, the current Android OS is far advanced than Windows when you install an app you get a screen about what the app needs to access. For example there are still Flashlight apps that want to access your contact list. Windows wouldn't warn like that so you need more than Antivirus apps. You need apps that sandbox bad apps. Android already has this.

Your troubles with Windows is showing itself here. Again, I won't install such a thing because of the above and in short Android is not Windows.

1. You do according to antivirus companies.
2. I've yet to see a virus on anyone's Android phone. All the problems I've seen are caused not by a virus but an app they decided to install. That's not a virus.

You've been TRAINED to install an antivirus because of Windows and how it was so insecure. Android, Linux, Apple OS and others? You won't find folk installing an antivirus unless they were predominately Windows users.

So nope. I won't install such a thing.

But I don't install many apps either. Why? Read https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/android-apps-and-trackers-or-why-i-install-so-few-apps-1/

Antivirus is a no brainer, you should install it here's why.

Again I have to say if you are already using 20+ apps on your smartphone, why not install one more app, that's an antivirus, I mean, not installing an antivirus is carelessness, antivirus protects your devices from a ton of other stuff too, its not 2005 anymore, antivirus have evolved for smart devices, they are not just antivirus they are much more than that.

I don't intend on hurting or offending anyone, but this is what I think, Peace!

No sale here.

There is a huge AV industry. They want to sell their products. Since I will not install 3rd party apps except the ones our office writes I don't have risk.

If folk go find APKs and enable installing those, then you need more protection.

As you said you have a subscription This will help the phone to avoid virus but in your case this will make your phone very slow and you cant surf smothly so my opinion is to avoid installing it in your phone.

I never use antivirus for Android. I think it will eat my ram for the background process. The only thing to avoid virus is i just download and install app from google play store. Never try to install from unknown sources
