Do viruses talk?

Mar 9, 2004 4:43PM PST

.
I really don't think this is a virus but then since I have no idea what it is ....................

Running W2K, using Netscape and Opera browsers, occasionally IE 6 SP1. AMD Processor 2600, 1024 RAM, Gigabyte mobo. Other than IE SP1, I have had this setup for almost a year.

A while ago a very clear woman's voice came from my speakers and said "What would you like for me to say? Type anything". There were no ads or odd sites open. I had two sites open in Netscape and one in Opera and the mail (Netscape), none of the sites had voice or moving graphics.

Task Manager doesn't show anything unusual in the list. I have the same things in the system tray that is usually there. I have not added or changed any sound files in at least three weeks and I have not changed any browser settings in the last few days.

I have run AVG, The Cleaner, Ad-aware, Spybod, Stinger and did an online scan at HouseCall. ZA runs continually.

Also in the last two or three days I have heard, about six times in all, a very clear ring of a phone come from the speakers. It rings only once each time. I thought perhaps at one time I had set some action performed in Windows or one of the browsers for that sound and the action was only now occurring, but now I'm not so sure about that. The last thing I installed was a weather utility from the Weather Channel but it's not running right now.

I've heard of strange voice in the head but ................. ? Anyone have any idea what's happening in my PC?

BTW, I do not have Bonzo Buddy, Gator or anything of that type installed.

Rosalie,

Since you've ran most of recommended security programs and did an online scan, you might want to download HijackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
Save it in its own folder, preferably in C:\hijackthis (create this folder hijackthis in C:\) then open Hijackthis.exe, click Scan button then click Save log. Save it in your desktop. Post the log in any of the forums listed at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.html that has experts in reviewing the Hijackthis log.

It could be one of the site that you viewed. I'm not sure but you can try viewing your systems' temporary internet files (type %temp% in Run then hit enter) or view the objects installed in your C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files, to see if you have anything suspicious or related file that played the voice. It can be a .wav, .swf etc files.

Note: you can safely delete the items in temporary internet folder and in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

What a fantastic response!

Installed HijackThis, generated a log and posted it on the SWI Forum.

There is practically nothing in Downloaded Program Files and what is there I recognize and is several days old. Nevertheless I deleted what was there. Systems temporary internet files have two entries for the 9th and I have no idea what they are, just letters and numbers. Not much in that folder either but deleted what was there.

Thanks, Donna, if none of this solves my problem I'll be back. Haven't heard any more voices. Happy

I just viewed your post and log in SWI and the 62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08 entry points to Dapiebar.dll which is a safe .dll file as per http://www.sysinfo.org/bholist.php?filter=62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08&count=&type=
This .dll file is related or installed by a download manager. Do you have a download manager program? If yes, you might want to inform the SWI expert that this file is legitimate and safe as per http://www.sysinfo.org/bholist.php?filter=62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08&count=&type
Just my suggestion Happy

Glad to know that you aren't hearing voices anymore from your PC.

I think he was taking about only this one:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

However, I will leave it for now since it doesn't seem to pose any threat. Happy

And yes I do have a download manager. No more voices but have heard the phone ring a few times. Still trying to track that one down. It must be a sound I enabled for some type activity but it would have been weeks ago, why would it just now start?

with the amount of RAM you have, the MOBO and the rest of your PC you do NOT need a download manager.

trust me when i tell you that it will not download any faster with it, than without it.

to test your download speed, please go to

http://www.dslreports.com

register and do their speed test.

I suspect you are above the 1MB barrier and dwonload manager will never get faster.

That site seems to be for broadband and I have dial up.

I need a download manager that will resume a download in case I'm disconnected.

sorry Rosalie, thought you were on high speed. with the set up you have it may be a worthwhile investment.

I have no idea what it is, but I have had the same exact thing. I had AOL IM on at the time and I imagined it was from there, maybe a commercial. I had it for about a week and have not heard it again. Scared the heck out of me though!!

I have also been startled by 'voices' only to find out they came from an ad on the top of the AIM buddy list, however, this was very different and AIM was not on. The voice was astoundingly clear, not anything like what would come from an AIM ad.

AIM was the first thing I checked. Then one by one I looked at all open widows and closed to the desk top. There was nothing that indicated in the least the voice could have been produced by anything I had open.

No more voices but have heard the phone ring a few times

Rosalie, do you use a voice modem? If yes, try to find out if there's a way to turn-off the voice capabalities of the modem. Or try muting the line-in in the sound properties.. (double-click the sound icon in your system tray or via control panel)..see if it will get rid of the rings.

OK, Donna, muted the line-in.

Heard the ring four or five more since first posting here.

Do you mean.. you're still hearing 'rings' after you've muted the line-in? Was reviewing the sound properties of the systems here and what I have as muted are:
Mono In and Line In.
Can you check yours? Is Mono In muted too?

I don't have Mono In ..

Line In

I haven't heard a ring since yesterday but then I haven't been hearing one everyday. I'll just have to wait a day or so to see if this has helped. It's not that the rings bother me so much, I would just like to know where they are coming from or what is causing them.

Mono In will not be there if it is not selected in the properties. Open the volume control, click Options, the click Properties, select mono in box.

It's not that the rings bother me so much, I would just like to know where they are coming from or what is causing them.
Since you've run a scan using your security programs (antivirus, antispyware, online scan) and HJT logs showed your system is clean, the cause of the ring could be the setting of the sound or modem only.

Hi Rosalie,

At my age I should hear voices out of nowhere. My doc even asked the last time in if I heard any ringing in my one deaf ear..nope..not yet. Anyway what has happened to me a couple or so times that an unusual voice suddenly appeared on my computer speakers was my wife either on the phone or trying to get on the phone while talking and I was either hooked up to my ISP on the net or picked up the phone receiver at the same time wife did. I also have dial-up....anyway her voice or the voice of person she was talking to came on my computer speakers for a short time.

This just info for reading (we do talk on other forums), as you seem to have something different. Wink

I had this very same thing happen to me the other day, but I saw the image of a girl. Every couple of seconds her eyes blink and a cursor asking me to type in anything I wanted. I didn't!
The trade mark Site Pal was clearly displayed. It advertizes Dynamic characters for your website. I was at bravenet.com at that time. For you not to see anything, perhaps because you had two application open at the same time.
