Do the SE mods still have a group email address?

Feb 16, 2010 4:07AM PST

I haven't seen a link in a while, though I confess I wasn't looking for it until today.
It seems that one of my recent posts went AWOL and I am not quite sure why that would have happened. Normally I would have asked via email rather than the forum but alas I have not found the address.

No: It was compromised...
Feb 16, 2010 4:36AM PST

The SE Mods Yahoo email account was compromised last month, with many people in the address book receiving phony emails, supposedly from Angeline, asking for money. As I understand it, its use was fading out even before the January incident, so at this time I'd recommend using the forum ROP system or contacting a SE mod directly, either using the forum PM system or individual email, assuming you have had prior email correspondence with them.

John

Forum PM system?
Feb 16, 2010 7:12AM PST

Is that back online? It's only been a couple of years since I last saw that option.

I knew about the email compromise - I didn't realize it had resulted in stopping use of the account.

Let's not build up too much suspense.

You made a critical statement of a certain some one.
I am very surprised that you other post is still there.

I don't think the situation is that simple ...

I've made critical statements about quite a number of people. Most of them are still there. And yes, some of them have been directed at that same person and worded quite strongly. I just don't see how that particular post could be interpreted as a TOS violation.

Judging from what I have seen there is usually a fairly obvious reason for deletion of posts. I have sometimes been surprised by posts that were not deleted but that is a different discussion.

Could be due to a complaint
Feb 16, 2010 7:17PM PST

I'd have to think that moderators take down posts that, to them, are inflammatory or potentially so but will also take a look at those that receive complaints. It's also quite possible that replies to your missing one caused a further southerly heading and a decision was made to trim further up the root just for insurance.

Yes, it could just be that simple.

Indeed...

The PM system was re-implemented and actually made operational a little over a year ago, though it's disabled by default unless the member chooses to enable it. Thus, relatively few members can be PMed, making it appear non-existent to many.

A stealth PM system? How ... 'helpful' ...
Feb 17, 2010 10:18AM PST

I checked my profile again and I did eventually find a tiny area marked as offering an opportunity to send an email. I don't recall seeing it before today. I gather from the disclaimer about revealing my email address if I send a message to somebody else that it's not quite a PM system. It took a while, but I did eventually find the location for the user to make a selection regarding whether to opt in or out of the system. Mine was marked as allowing messages so it apparently carried over from the old PM system. That or it defaults to 'allow'?

Given the number of complaints I've seen about the absence of the PM system I'm surprised y'all didn't run 32 point banner ads across the forum pages when it was turned back on.

Low usage...
Feb 19, 2010 3:16AM PST

>>> Jonah: See the email I sent you yesterday. <<<

Statistically, the PM system was rarely used, which is why it took so long, and so many requests from a few of us, for it to be re-implemented after the last overhaul. It was initially quite buggy, something I privately exploited quite a bit for demonstration purposes, but is stable now. The only downside is that you email address is divulged, rather than being optional as it was in the past, something I hope will be changed in the future. Regardless, there was a private thanking of Marc for pushing the project up the priority ladder and into our hands.

John

P.S. It defaults to 'disallow' unless you change it or previously had it set to 'allow' under the old system.
