Do the EBay XBox Slim Hard Drives actually work

Dec 8, 2010 1:11AM PST

I just bought the 4gb X Box Slim. I purchased this model over the 250 gb model because it was on the Black Friday deal at target where you got a $60 gift card (thus making it $140, or $160 less than the 250 gb).

It is for my 11 year old who I do not see going online, downloading videos or demos etc - for now just a drop in the disc and play the game type of situation. Due to that i just did not see needing the 250 gb hard drive.

ANYWAY - here is my question. IF in the future I did want to drop in a hard drive I know I can get a 250 gb from microsoft for $130 (still making me $30 ahead). BUT I have also seen like $70 hard drives on EBAY - these are the slim version. Do these work too? Or are they just some rip off? $70.00 seems awesome, but not sure if this is a case of it being too good to be true

here are a few examples:

Just my thoughts.

I prefer the HDD because we can put the game on the HDD and while we still have to put the game in the unit, the noise from the 360 is less and I bet the drive will last longer.

The HDDs you noted are not ones I can comment on but it is well known that such kits do work.

They probably work

They probably work, BUT the catch is you have to find a seller on ebay who is actually selling what they advertise, AND at some point in time Microsoft could potentially lock out (or limit) those drives much like they did with third party memory cards for the 360.

So what might be a safer compromise, is to wait a little while for places like GameStop to have a supply of used HDDs for the 360S. So long as there are no issues with the drive itself, you save a little money, and get something that should be guaranteed to work.

Yes they work.... the problem is, like mentioned, is that xbox could ban you from xbox live if they figure out a way in the future to track third party hard drives. If you get a hard drive from game stop from the old xbox 360, you can buy a case for your slim xbox 360 from buy.com or goldenbridge.hk for like 5 bucks. You can have a 20, 60, 120, or 250 gb hard drive this year, and microsoft cant tell that you have a fake case, but they see that it's a legit Microsoft HDD

I bought an old xbox hard drive today

Woot.com actually had the 250 gb HD's for the old x box for $49.99 + $5.00 shipping today, so after watching a few youtube's on how easy it looked to do just what you said austin I snagged one.

My xbox does not get moved around ever (meaning I don't cart it room to room) so slippng this in should be fine, especially if I get a case like you recommend.
