General discussion

Do I really have a potentially dangerous file?

Oct 31, 2008 12:22PM PDT

Windows XP w/SP3 IE 7
Compac PresarioProcessor - 2.40 gigahertz
AMD Athlon64Memory - 1.37GB of Ram
200 GB hard drive

Something new started today in my Outlook Express program. When trying to save a file (specifically a .pspimage or .psp which is a Paint Shop Pro program file extension), a dialogue box pops up saying that Windows has found this file to be potentially dangerous and will not open the file. Then for the next several emails when trying to save another file of the same type, another box pops up saying "command did not execute". There is a Windows logo icon in the upper left-hand corner of the first dialogue box. The box about the command not executing only has the words.

These files come from a yahoo tube group that I'm in; however, I have delivery set up to come through my OE program using my gmail email addy.

If I go to gmail online to view my mail, I am able to download the file from there and run an avast scan on it -- which does show it clean. I saved the file to my desktop, ran the scan, but have not opened the file even though nothing was found wrong with it.

For info -- I've updated all definitions for these prevention programs and run scans for Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, SuperAntiSpyware, Malware Bytes, and Avast. I also keep updated and use Spyware Blaster, and have the latest Kerio Personal Firewall (pay version). None of these scanning utilities found any problems. I also have all appropriate Windows Updates.

Any ideas on what is causing these blocks to happen within OE and if they're either safe or unsafe?

Thanks,

Julea

I stand corrected

The dialogue box that says "command did not execute" does have an Outlook Express logo in the upper right hand corner.

Can anyone help me please?

I'm still occasionally getting the dialogue box re: command did not execute when trying to save "some" pspimage files. Yet when saving from the website they come down fine. I still have not opened any of these files, but have saved them hoping to hear something here.

Can find no malware on PC after doing all scans mentioned above. Is there a security security setting re: this that somehow got changed -- however, not all are affected.

Just a guess Julea

Open Outlook Express and click on Tools>>>Options>>>Security tab and see if there is a checkmark in the box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". If there is, take it out and hit "apply>>>OK". If there is not, I would suggest posting this in the e-mail forum.

LOL -- first thing I did was that!

Hi Roddy - thanks for your response.

I did your suggestion even before I ran the scans and I'd removed that checkmark eons ago (LOL). I've already posted in email forum and no response from there yet. I'll go and bump my post up again.

For what its' worth -- I fixed this situation

I tried saving the file under a different name -- it worked -- and it opens fine too. I did scan it first though and no glitches. At least there is a workaround.

lol -- Kees has been helping me over in email

and I did find a fix; however, something else has shown up -- somehow my PC no longer has permission to open a .pspimage file.

This is so weird because I've been opening and saving pspimage files for eons. I am able to rename a pspimage to .psp file (which is the psp7 program); then right click on it and say open with PSP9. It will then open and I can resave compatible with psp7.

That's a lot of work and this just hasn't been happening before. Oh well, I may decide I don't need to save as many of to those pretty image files anymore or just work them in an older program.

PC's are always full of surprises, aren't they! Who says they do only what one tells them -- I KNOW they have a mind of their own.

It is probably a matter of
Nov 2, 2008 3:45AM PST

creating a rule for that file but I forget how to do that. It's been a long time since I have needed to do so myself. Kees probably can tell you how to do that.
