Do I need ethernet drivers and are they all the same?

OK, so I got a second hand computer with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. I couldn't connect to the internet or see any newtowks on the network control panel so I looked at hardware. Apparently I don't have an "ethernet controller" driver (amongst a couple of other drivers), which I guess is problematic since I'm trying to use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet. I can see some drivers online, but do I have to get a specific driver?

Need drivers?

Probably. You need to find out if the Ethernet device is on the motherboard or a separate PCI card. Then search Google for the drivers.

I see

Thanks, but I don't know how to tell. Do I need to open the case or something and the port will be connected to either the motherboard or something else? Or was that a stupid question?

My motherboard is an MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 so I'm pretty sure the ethernet is part of that. I searched the MSI website ( but I can't find Windows 7 ethernet drivers specifically for that motherboard anywhere.

Good example of when...

When you can't find the drivers for onboard and Microsoft doesn't find them for you, this is when I go get the usual 5 buck PCI ethernet board.

Here are the motherboard drivers . . .
