Question

Do I need an internet hardware upgrade?

Mar 10, 2016 12:39PM PST

I have been experiencing some lag and slow speeds on my home network. Just two of us in the home. I stream a lot of video and play PS4 games. Seems my wife can barely use the internet while I'm doing either. I believe our speed is 25 mbps. Not sure if my hardware, purchased in October 2010, is the culprit?

Linksys CM100 Cable Modem DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0
Linksys E3000 Wireless Router 300 Megabits/Second 802.11N

The CM100 is pretty dated. Check the new Motorola 6000 series modems first for compatibility with your ISP.

For <$70 shipped, it's a great upgrade.

Also, make sure you get a DOCSIS 3 modem, whichever one you end up with. That's likely the flavor your cable provider is using if you are seeing 25MBps.

FWIW, I've never been a fan of the E3000. Linksys can do better than that, and does, for example with the WRT1200AC. The WRT1900ACS is fine too ($$) IMO, though, the router will be a bit of trial and error until you find the one you like best.

FWIW, I just upgraded to an Asus RT-AC3200. Looks like some sort of six headed wifi hydra beast(!) Still trying to learn everything it is capable of Wink

you are limiting yourself if you don't go that route.
