Do I need an antivirus like McAfee if I have SP2?

by t3d2p1 / December 15, 2004 1:15 PM PST

I guess this is a pretty stupid question, but I'm confused after reading all the forum answers about SP2. Someone said that you should not have antivirus software if you are installing SP2. I have McAfee running with Personal Firewall and Antivirus. Is that redundant if I have SP2 or do I need it also?

Yes. Please get yourself a good antivirus ie. Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Nod32, F-Secure, Kaspersky or BitDefender.

Indeed you do.

If you really have SP2, its Security Center will prompt you to install an anti-virus software. It will actually detect which program you have (not all), and if it cannot find any, tell you so.

"Someone said that you should not have antivirus software if you are installing SP2.:

The recommendation is to turn off your antivirus program while installing SP2. Once the installation is completed, you need to restart your computer. That will start your antivirus program again.

If you like McAfee, continue to use it. Make sure you keep it up to date and run scans often.

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
