Do I need a dongle?

by queens gambit / January 14, 2009 9:41 PM PST

I am thinking about purchasing a laptop computer for a group of people who are beginners (informal sessions). I normally use a desktop and I am unfamiliar with laptop computers. I have been advised that I need a dongle. I have not come across this term before and do not know exactly what dongle is? Is a similair to a memory stick. I have been told you do not need dongles on modern laptops nowadays.

Can someone give me any information on this.

Thanks

Generic term

A dongle is a generic term for any special device(black box) or cabling that accesses or provides a path for an end device to work. Such an item could e a special cable or an adapter when needed. Of course, it all depends on what is being attached or accessed. Since you gave no clue its still an open question.

If you buy a modern new laptop I don't see a problem at the moment. Many items and/or devices will readily attach as various ports are offered for this purpose. However, the cheaper the laptop the less port options are std. so you may need some sort of expresscard(mounted in slot) for additional options if the need arising.

Who advised you and why?

As was already noted dongles were and still are used for specific hardware to enable it to function but they were and are still also used to enable certain installed applications to function - they serve as copy protection devices.

One of the best French door fridges we've tested

A good-looking fridge with useful features like an auto-filling water pitcher and a temperature-adjustable "FlexZone" drawer. It was a near-flawless performer in our cooling tests.
