Do I need a different router/modem?

Hi all, newbie here, and fairly computer illiterate.

My wife and I have four kids, three of which use Ipads for school. The fourth will have one next year. They have trouble sometimes using them all at once. If we watch Netflix, all Ipads must be turned off, or it will not work. How can we get better output?

Our service is from the local phone company. Basic phone wire into the house, then a splitter(DSL/phone). DSL cable to the modem/router(I don't know the difference). It is a Visionnet M505N ADSL2+.

The one we had was fried from lightning. The tech that replaced it said the new ones are not as good as the old. Can I buy a new modem/router and just plug it up myself?

Our current internet package is 7 mbps down and 512 kbps up. I plan to upgrade to 9 mbps down and 768 kbps tomorrow(what I thought we had). I'm sure it will help, but do we need a better router/modem?

the speed of service is. I'd wait till you upgrade the service, then decide.
