Question

Do I Need a 2.0 HDMI Cable For a 4K TV

by RayPaula / November 22, 2014 11:52 PM PST

Hi, I'm getting ready to purchase the Samsung UN55HU9000 UHD 4K TV which is 2.0. I'm currently remodeling my rec room and will be running an "in wall" HDMI installation. I currently have an older version in wall, but will I ultimately need to upgrade to a 2.0 HDMI? If I do, this is the time for me to do so. Please let me know if it's needed and/or your thoughts. Thanks, Ray

"HDMI 2.0 does not define new cables or new connectors."

Samsung forum: Do I Need a 2.0 HDMI Cable For a 4K TV

What I gather is 2.0 HDMI (in a nut shell) is all about bandwidth and higher frame rates above 30fps. Wouldn't I need a 2.0 HDMI cable to receive full 4K resolution that is above 30fps? Also, I use a 4K video camcorder that is capable of the following;

4K: 3840 x 2160p at 60 fps (150 Mbps)
4K: 3840 x 2160p at 50 fps (150 Mbps)
XAVC S: 1920 x 1080 / 60 fps
AVCHD: 1920 x 1080p / 60 fps
AVCHD: 1440 x 1080i / 60 fps

I believe that I wouldn't receive the full benefits straight out of my video camcorder without a 2.0 HDMI on the new Samsung UHD 4K TV. My current HDMI cable is a Monster Cable Ultimate High Speed THX 1000 HDX HDMI Cable 3D - 17.8 Gbps. If I'm wrong in my thoughts, please correct me. I sincerely appreciate your help. Thanks, Ray

My answer is no. However there are so many companies that will line up with hundred dollar cables ready to tell you that you need them.
