Do I have Embarq DSL

Sep 19, 2008 12:15PM PDT

I took pictures today of some equipment where my phone service originates, and I was wondering if anyone can identify the equipment in the pics. Embarq.com says it is not available for my number, but they have been adding it all around me. I live just under 2 miles from the "box", so distance should not be a problem. Here is the link to the photos.

than just a box. In fact, little is a gross understatement. That "box" could be anything from an RT to a DSLAM. It does resemble a DSLAM but it's impossible to tell from the pictures. Have you taken into account whether the "box" is fed by copper or fiber? Does the "box" feed down your street specifically? Does the "box" have ample unloaded pairs to your area? The questions could go on and on.

Why would they lie to you when they loose money by not providing DSL?

The "box"

The small white box mounted to the side of the bigger component has 3 small lights labeled PWR, NETW, and CUS. The lines coming out are in conduit, so determining the type of cable is impossible.

Also, I was not suggesting that Embarq would "lie" to me. I thought that maybe the equipment had been installed, but not online yet. My county (Greene Co. NC) is currently ranked almost last out of the 100 counties in NC for BB internet coverage with less than 50% of residents having access. Legislators have pass a bill to provide funding to bring us up to speed. The goal is to have everyone in Greene County online by the end of this year. Everyone meaning all customers that live within 18000 ft of the feed.

That last link didn't work. Just do a google search for the following:

Total Access 1148 OSP DSLAM, 48-Port, Local DC Powered, 4 x T1 IMA Network Uplink

It appears so and it's fed by four T1s (one T1 is 1.544 Mb/s, 24 customers on voice, 24 customers on DSL). 48 Port means that 48 customers can be served. If they've run out, that's all there is.

NCGUY,

What's your address? I'll gladly check to see if DSL is available for you now. I believe I remember seeing you on DSL reports also. Let me know if I can help. Shoot me an email at Embarq_Joey@embarq.com or IM on DSL reports.

Thanks!

Joey H.
