Do different modems matter?

Nov 15, 2012 5:47AM PST

The cable company wants over $3000 to install cable internet at our house, and DSL is not available. We currently have satellite internet from Dish Network and it's a pretty new modem. I currently have it hooked up to an Apple Airport Extreme base station and would like to make it faster. I saw some modems at Walmart, and was wondering if one of those might offer a noticeable boost. Any ideas? It's a drag streaming movies ect;

What is the speed (in mbps) they advertise and what you pay for?
And what is the effective speed (try 2 or 3 different hits for a google search for INTERNET SPEEDTEST)?

They updated there plans, I think 3mbps uploads, and up to 10mbps downloads. The first speed test said I got 1.3 upload, and 3 download. The second gave me 2.64mb uploads, and 11.24mbps downloads.
