Question

Do cell phone apps access personal files?

when you download an app (even free ones) it asks for : access to your phone's identity, SMS, location, media files, wi-fi connection information, device ID/Call information....does that mean I am giving them permission to access to all my personal text messages, pictures, call history, name/address or any other information my cell carrier has about me?

Hard to say with any certainty.....

Nobody can remotely see the information stored in your carrier's files, but your stored information on the phone would be available to be accessed by giving permission.

I recommend if you are concerned about your personal information from possibly being accessed, just answer "No" when presented with such permission requests.

they will not have access to all the info the cell carrier has on you but they could have access to everything on the phone. Always look at the permissions and see if it makes sense for the app you are wanting to install.

And those permissions can mean nothing.

bank accounts

many people access their bank account information on their phone so why aren't their passwords being stolen and accounts drained left and right if cell phones are completely insecure. Likewise what difference does it make if you give permission or not if any personal information is so available on your phone. I am just trying to download NFL mobile and it asks to access my media files....I just want to know if the employees at the NFL will be able to see my personal pictures in exchange for me being able to watch the ball game.

Accounts are being drained left and right.

My examples are from the past as well as the current day. The security is far too lax and one bad app and you could be toast.

So the question is, what price security? Should the smart phone be locked down further to stop you from installing your own app? And given the governments constant push for collecting data, we know that messages and more are not secure.

The moment you think about using a secure OS like TAILS, this is what the US Government writes:
