Resolved Question

DNS server

Aug 27, 2014 3:17AM PDT

When I get on the internet I sometimes cannot get to any site. I get a message at the bottom of my screen saying "resolving host" and then after a minute or so I get a message saying "site unavailable". Then I go to the windows troubleshooter and it tells me that my DNS server is not working. If I restart my computer and try again then everything works fine and I can get to any site I want. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? Why does it work after i turn my computer off and restart it again? How can I fix this?

If you were on Time Warner today, I had the same thing. They had bad internet but it should be OK now.
I was getting the same nonsense from the Windows trouble shooter.

Interesting. I've had the same from TW
Aug 27, 2014 7:45AM PDT

For the past two days, early morning connections are sporadic to non-existent. I'm on EDT and am up around 4:00 AM. From then until about 7:00 or so, nothing. My modem log posts the errors but not in an understandable format. It's LEDs are as they should be and showing internet activity. I do the usual by connecting my PC directly to it. Sometimes ipconfig displays my ISP by name but I can't ping their server. In the past, I've been able to call their automated support line and it will note an outage in my area. Another odd thing today is that Google maps now displays a completely different default city from my own. I'm not allowing cookies from Google and I don't save history so I know it's a clean look each time. The city it now displays upon opening is about 40 miles north of me and the previous default display was within block of my home. I find that to be particularly strange. As well, when I bring up Lowes, it thinks the nearest store is also in that city rather than the one nearby. Another piece of the puzzle? Something is going on with TW for sure.

Clears things up a bit. It doesn't happen all the time but it is a nuisance. I have Time Warner too.

This mornings news confirms TW problems
Aug 27, 2014 8:15PM PDT

Apparently its internet backbone caused problems nationwide. I don't have Road Runner with TW but another ISP. Time Warner provides the cable in the area and other ISPs contract with them. I believe this came about due to some anti-monopoly laws. Having both TW and a separate ISP does mean two possible sources of the problem with such issues occur.

Good to know that somebody else is having the same problem although I don't wish it on them. I think it is Time Warner too because the problem doesn't happen all the time.

Think back to when it worked.

There may be clues in the changes or expired antivirus suite. As presented the list won't fit in this box.
