DMZ and security

Apr 3, 2011 5:56AM PDT

My niece has a EA sports game that she plays through her Wii. Their technical support said that she needs to DMZ her router. From what I have been reading on the Internet when you do that to your router you lose a lot of your security. I don't fully understand the technical part of it. Anyway she only has one computer and she has the router password protected so that other people can not use her Internet. I am just wondering what the DMZing her router would do to her as far as security?
would you have any recommendations for her?

This would be a first.

Placing the Wii into the DMZ and finding such an issue would be a first.

My thought here is that a longer discussion would have to be had about the Wii and the internet but the short answer is to place the Wii into the DMZ if there are gaming issues.

There are no known security issues with this today.

Server IP address?
Apr 3, 2011 8:02AM PDT

Thank you for your response. I found these directions on the Internet to DMZ her router. It looks pretty straightforward except I am wondering where I will find the "servers IP address" in step four. Thank you for helping me with this.

1. Open a Web browser, and type the router's IP address (The router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1). Click Go.
2. Enter the username and password for the router (Default username is admin and password is password).
3. From the browser Main Menu select Advanced > Security. Some routers, such as the MR814, use the WAN Setup Options, page, instead.
4. Enter the server's IP address.
5. Click apply

I see it.
